Background of the study
Traditional marriage institutions have long been integral to cultural identity and societal organization in many Nigerian communities, including Ilesa East Local Government Area. These institutions, steeped in customary practices, offer frameworks that regulate matrimonial relationships, conflict resolution, and family integration (Adeyemi, 2023). Over time, their role has become increasingly significant in promoting marital stability and social cohesion. Traditional marriage rites, ceremonies, and the ensuing community support networks provide couples with a sense of belonging and shared responsibility, contributing to the long-term stability of marriages (Balogun, 2024). However, modernization and the influence of Western marital practices have introduced complexities into these traditional systems, resulting in both resilience and conflict. Recent studies indicate that while traditional marriage institutions still command respect, they are often challenged by evolving social norms and economic pressures (Femi, 2025). The interplay between tradition and modernity is central to understanding marital dynamics in Ilesa East. This research examines how traditional marriage practices influence marital stability, addressing both positive cultural impacts and potential areas of discord in contemporary settings.
Statement of the problem
Traditional marriage institutions in Ilesa East face challenges in maintaining marital stability amidst rapid socio-cultural changes. Modern influences, urbanization, and shifts in economic paradigms have altered traditional roles and expectations, often leading to conflicts within marital unions (Olujimi, 2024). Furthermore, the lack of formal legal backing for these institutions in certain cases creates ambiguities regarding conflict resolution and marital rights. These issues contribute to an increased incidence of marital discord and instability, which undermines the foundational role of traditional practices in promoting family unity. Despite the longstanding importance of these institutions, there is limited empirical research on their current effectiveness in maintaining stable marriages, thereby necessitating a comprehensive investigation into the evolving dynamics (Soyinka, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
To examine the influence of traditional marriage institutions on marital stability.
To identify challenges posed by modern influences on traditional marriage practices.
To propose recommendations for integrating traditional and contemporary approaches to marital conflict resolution.
Research questions:
How do traditional marriage institutions affect marital stability in Ilesa East?
What modern influences challenge the effectiveness of these institutions?
How can traditional practices be adapted to address contemporary marital issues?
Research Hypotheses:
Traditional marriage institutions significantly contribute to marital stability.
Modern socio-economic changes adversely affect traditional marital practices.
Integrative approaches enhance marital conflict resolution.
Significance of the study
This study is significant in highlighting the continuing role of traditional marriage institutions in ensuring marital stability. The findings will provide cultural and policy insights to stakeholders, including community leaders and policymakers, on how to reconcile traditional practices with modern realities. The research aims to inform community-based strategies that reinforce marital unity and stability, contributing to broader social harmony (Akinola, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining traditional marriage institutions and their impact on marital stability in Ilesa East Local Government Area, focusing solely on existing practices and contemporary challenges.
Definitions of terms:
